That Look

“Where’s my Ellie Elephant?”

“I don’t know, it’s bedtime. There’s no time to look for her now. We will find her tomorrow.”

“But I need her to sleep!”

“You didn’t need her last night. You’ll be fine, you have all these others.”

“But -”

“But nothing. It’s bedtime. We’ll find Ellie tomorrow. Now, no getting out of bed to look for her, no turning lights on, no whining. Just bed. Okay?”

“Okay.”

Twenty minutes later:

“MOM! I NEED A TISSUE!”

I sigh.

“Then come out and get one!”

She shuffles out, Ellie Elephant in hand.

“Explain yourself, child! Did you get out of bed to look for her like I told you not to?”

“No, she was in bed with me the whole time, I just felt around underneath it.”

“You felt around under the bed in the dark?”

“No, silly, I turned the light on.”

“So you did exactly what I told you not to do?”

That look.
